Each square has a number arranged so that the sum of the columns, rows, and diagonal rows are all equal. The total number is called magical nonvariables. In medieval Europe, it was believed that magic squares had the power to transcend nature, so magic squares were also used as talismans to protect themselves from cursed eyes, plague, and other illnesses.
